The MLIA is a non-profit, volunteer organization with the mission to enhance Mona Lake and keep it usable. Routine projects include spraying to control weeds and clean out of the channel to Lake Michigan. Funding is from voluntary contributions, primarily from lakeshore property owners and also from the City. Staffing is from volunteer citizen / residents. The MLIA works closely with the Mona Lake Watershed Council. MLIA concentrates on activities within Mona Lake while the Watershed Council concentrates on upstream remediation efforts.
Use of funds in 2018 were $9,000 for spraying and water testing. This year, we anticipate slightly higher expenses for spraying. In 2013-2014, we used a combined total of $125,000 for channel dredging due to all time record low water levels. In those years, we also used $10,000/yr. for spraying and water testing.
